Iris — Terms of Use

By using Iris you accept the terms below. If you don't agree, don't use the app.

1. What the app is

Iris is a macOS app that prepares photos and videos before they go into your library: it fixes the capture date and location, writes title, description and keywords, renames in bulk with sequential numbering and finds duplicates. It is not a storage service and does not replace your backups.

The app modifies your files. When you press Save, the date, location, title, description and keywords are written into the files themselves. For videos the write is a re-package (remux) without re-encoding. Renaming changes file names on disk. The app first writes a temporary file, checks that it opens, keeps a rescue copy where needed and records the previous state so you can undo. These reduce the risk, they don't eliminate it: undo cannot restore files that you changed or moved outside the app in the meantime. Keep backups before making bulk changes.

2. File formats

RAW files (e.g. NEF, CR2, ARW) are read but not written: the app blocks the write explicitly. We don't guarantee that every format, codec or unusual file will be read or written correctly. The two halves of a Live Photo are tied together by an internal identifier that the app reads but never changes.

3. Dates and locations

When you recover a date from a file name, or apply an offset or a common date to many files, the result is what you asked for, not a verified real capture time. The same goes for coordinates you pick on the map or type by hand. The app flags "suspicious" dates that look wrong (e.g. year 0021), but the judgement is yours. Don't treat the metadata as evidence.

4. Map and place search

The map and place search are provided by Apple (Apple Maps) and are subject to its terms and policy. We don't guarantee their accuracy, availability or completeness. See also the Privacy Policy, section 6.

5. Folders synced with the cloud

Iris works on files on your Mac. If a folder is synced with a cloud service (e.g. pCloud, iCloud Drive, Dropbox), the changes the app makes will sync according to that service's terms and behaviour, for which we are not responsible.

6. Your data is your responsibility

We keep no copies of your files and cannot recover anything if something is lost or altered. Make sure you have working backups, independent of this app.

8. Intellectual property

The code, design, graphics and texts of the app belong to Christos Dimakis. Your photos and videos remain exclusively yours. We acquire no rights over them.

9. No warranty

The app is provided "as is", without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We don't guarantee that it will run uninterrupted, be error-free, or be compatible with every future version of macOS.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect or consequential damages, nor for loss or alteration of photos, videos or metadata arising from use of the metadata-writing or renaming features, from a power failure or abrupt quit during a write, or from syncing with a cloud service.

Nothing in these terms limits the rights you have under consumer protection law, nor excludes liability for wilful misconduct or gross negligence.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by Greek law. As a consumer you keep the right to bring proceedings in the courts of your place of residence.

12. Mac App Store

The app is distributed through the Mac App Store and is also subject to Apple's Terms. Apple is not responsible for the app and has no obligation to support it.
