Privacy Policy
App: Athena · Last updated: November 5, 2026
In short: Athena has no accounts, no servers of its own, collects no usage analytics and shows no ads.
Your notes are plain files in a folder you choose: on your device or, if you ask for it, in your own pCloud or Dropbox.
We have no access to any of it.
1. Who is responsible
Controller: Christos Dimakis, Peristeri, Attica, Greece.
Contact: athena@dimakis.app
2. Where your notes live
- On your device. Notebooks, sections and pages are files (Markdown and their attachments: images, audio, video, files) inside a folder. By default it is the app’s own folder. You can pick another one, e.g. in iCloud Drive; then Apple manages it, under Apple’s own privacy policy, not us.
- In your own cloud (optional). If you connect pCloud or Dropbox, the notebooks you pick are synced with your account there. See section 4.
- Search index. To search quickly, the app keeps a database of the text of your pages on the device. It stays on the device only.
- Locked sections. The content of the pages of a locked section is encrypted (AES-256) with a password you set. The password is not stored anywhere and cannot be recovered, not even by us. If the folder is synced, the files are uploaded already encrypted.
3. What the app uses
- Camera (if you allow it): to take a photo or scan a document into a page. The image is stored in the page, in your folder.
- Location (if you allow it, only while the app is open): when you take a photo from the app, the place where it was taken is kept inside the image, as the iPhone camera does. It is not sent to us. If an image has a location (your own photo or an imported one), to show the name of the place (city, country) the app asks Apple’s map services, which receive the coordinates. See section 4.
- Photos: when you pick photos to import, the app sees only the ones you pick, through the system picker. To “Save to Photos” it asks for add-only permission.
- Microphone (if you allow it): for audio notes. Recordings are stored in the page, in your folder.
- Speech recognition (if you allow it): to transcribe a recording into text, using Apple’s system. Where the device supports it for the language, it happens on the device. Where it does not, iOS or macOS may send the audio to Apple to be transcribed, under Apple’s policy; we receive nothing.
- Face ID / Touch ID: to unlock locked sections without typing the password. The system performs the authentication; the app only learns whether it succeeded. For this, a key derived from your password is kept in the device’s Keychain, on this device only; it is not synced and does not leave the device. We have no access to biometric data.
- Text recognition (OCR): on images and scans, with Tesseract and with Apple’s text recognition, on the device. No image or text is sent to a server.
- Scan translation: happens on the device with Apple’s system translation. The first time for a language, the system may ask you to download that language from Apple.
- Notifications: page reminders are local notifications on your device. There is no push server.
- Share to Athena (iPhone, iPad): when you send text, a link, an image or a file to Athena from another app, it is saved in Quick Notes on your device.
- Web Clipper (Mac, Safari): only when you click its button, it reads the address, the title and the selected text of the open tab and saves them in Quick Notes on your Mac. It reads nothing else and sends nothing anywhere.
- Import from other apps (e.g. OneNote, Apple Notes): the files you choose are read on the device.
- Identity: the name you set in Settings (if you don’t change it, the device name) and a random identifier the app creates. They are used so your other devices can show “editing…” and not overwrite a page. While you edit a page they are written to a small file inside your folder, so they are also uploaded to your cloud if you sync. The file expires if it is not renewed within 5 minutes.
- Clipboard: read only when you paste.
- Settings: your choices are stored only on the device.
- Sharing and printing: happen only when you ask, through the system. The app or recipient you choose has its own policy.
4. Internet connection
The app works offline: you write, search and record without a network. It connects to the internet only in the cases below.
Except for pCloud and Dropbox, which you turn on yourself and which are listed first, the requests are plain and carry no information about you or your notes:
- pCloud (optional): only if you choose, in Settings, to connect your own pCloud account, the notebooks you pick are uploaded to your account and synced with your other devices, through pCloud’s servers (api.pcloud.com or eapi.pcloud.com, and my.pcloud.com for signing in). You type your password on pCloud’s own sign-in page, not in the app; the app keeps only an access token in your device’s Keychain and deletes it when you tap “Disconnect”. The developer receives nothing. pCloud has its own privacy policy. What is uploaded stays in your account until you delete it there.
- Dropbox (optional): only if you choose, in Settings, to connect your own Dropbox account, the notebooks you pick are uploaded to your account and synced with your other devices, through Dropbox’s servers (www.dropbox.com and api.dropbox.com for signing in, api.dropboxapi.com and content.dropboxapi.com for files). You type your password on Dropbox’s own sign-in page, not in the app; the app keeps only access tokens in your device’s Keychain and deletes them when you tap “Disconnect”. The developer receives nothing. Dropbox has its own privacy policy. What is uploaded stays in your account until you delete it there.
- YouTube, Vimeo and Dailymotion videos: if you put in a page a link to a video from these services and the app shows it as a video inside the page, then while the page is open the player loads from the service (youtube.com, vimeo.com or dailymotion.com) and the video’s title is requested from it. The service sees your IP address and the video, and may use cookies, under its own policy. For the YouTube player, the app’s identifier (app.dimakis.notebook) is declared as the origin. If you don’t put in such links, no such request is made. We send them no information about you or your notes.
- Place name of a photo: for an image with a location, Apple’s map services are asked for the name of the place (city, country). Apple receives the coordinates and handles them under its own policy.
- OCR languages: if you download a Tesseract language in Settings, its file comes from GitHub (raw.githubusercontent.com, the tesseract-ocr project). As the server, GitHub sees your IP address.
- Our apps: the list of our apps, with names, icons and links, is downloaded from our website (dimakis.app, hosted on GitHub Pages) when you open that page.
- Privacy Policy and Terms of Use: open from dimakis.app in a Safari window inside the app.
- Contact: opens your mail app with a message to us. At its end it includes support details (app version, device model, system version, language, region and time zone), which you can see and delete before sending. Nothing is sent unless you tap “Send” yourself.
5. What we don’t do
- There is no account or sign-up.
- There are no ads and no third-party analytics or crash-reporting tools.
- We don’t track you across apps or websites and don’t use the IDFA.
- We don’t read, analyse or use the content of your notes, nor to train any artificial intelligence system.
- We don’t sell or share data, because we don’t collect it.
6. Your rights
Since we hold no personal data about you, there is nothing for us to correct or delete on our side.
Your notes are your own files: you view, copy and delete them in your folder or inside the app. What you have uploaded to
pCloud or Dropbox you manage there. Deleting the app deletes the data the app itself keeps on the device, not a folder
you chose yourself nor what has been uploaded to your cloud. You can revoke any permission (Camera, Location,
Microphone, Speech Recognition, Face ID) in your system Settings. You have the right to lodge a complaint with the
Hellenic Data Protection Authority (dpa.gr) or the authority of your country.
7. Children
The app is not aimed specifically at children and collects no data from anyone.
8. Changes
If this policy changes, this page and the date at the top will be updated.
